What to expect below:
List - 6 ways to become a superstar employee and set yourself up for entrepreneurial success
(in a 3 minute read)
↳ 6 cheat codes for employees and entrepreneurs
How do you become a superstar employee and stand out?
This will open up doors for you and set you up for quick success when you transition to entrepreneurship.
#1 - Write an internal newsletter
Most people think this is just for external. It’s not.
Write an internal newsletter and hand pick who you send it to.
Pick interesting people, who you want to build relationships with. Who can also benefit your career.
Focus on a topic that adds value to them.
Entrepreneur angle - newsletters are a great way to build an audience that you own.
#2 - Be indispensable and visible
As an employee think about what you can do to ensure you’re vital.
Think about critical information, critical processes, anything that is critical in the business.
How can you have some influence over it.
This ensures that for the business to function optimally you’re a key player and it dramatically increases your visibility.
Example - you’re a recruiter. There are weekly reports that each Team Lead needs to produce and send to their boss. They most likely find it tedious. Take on this task for all Team Leads. Make a large report. You send to the boss. You become vital and visible.
Entrepreneur angle - being able to identify the critical tasks that move the needle in your business is crucial.
#3 - Be a creator
Most employees just follow what is already laid out for them.
Someone else makes the plans, creates the documents, and makes the policies
Instead, make your own version of the plans. This is more about practice.
Start doing the things that the leaders do, and compare what you produce to what they produce.
You’ll get better over time.
Don’t wait to get promoted before you do the things.
Do the things first. They get you promoted.
Entrepreneur angle - being the CEO of your company requires a different set of skills to an employee. Get this experience early so you can hit the ground running.
#4 - Work in public
Make sure everyone knows about the cool and value-additive stuff you’re doing.
Present all the great things you’re doing to demonstrate your progress and your talent.
Not all bragging - here’s what went well, here’s what didn’t go well, here’s the lessons.
Insert yourself into the conversation.
Stand out.
Remember - You’re only rewarded for what can be measured or seen.
Entrepreneur angle - being able to articulate what you do, how you do it and why it’s of value is entrepreneurship 101.
#5 - Choose your team wisely
People don’t quit jobs that quit Managers.
Managers directly influence your trajectory in the company.
They influence the work you get, your reputation, your brand.
If your manager isn’t respected or lacks clout this will taint you.
Make strategic moves to build relationships and work with people that will propel you not drag you.
Entrepreneur angle - being able to identify talent and the best people to work with is key.
#6 - Flip the script
The McKinsey Pyramid Principle.
Most employees communicate in a traditional story format:
beginning, middle, end (conclusion - important part).
example - beginning (fluff about the market), middle (more fluff), end (recommended action)
This is flawed.
People have short attention spans. People are busy. You lose your audience.
Instead, flip the order:
recommended action → explain why in 3 succinct points → explain the rationale behind each point
Entrepreneur angle - effective communication is fundamental to successful entrepreneurship. Marketing, sales, hiring etc.
I hope you found this helpful.
That’s all from me.
